@hortonhousing

Using graffiti to create outdoor visual arts with vulnerable young people between 16 – 18.

project info

The project engaged with care leavers or homeless young people aged 16-18, who lived in supported accommodation provided by Horton Housing Association in Manningham and West Bowling. ‘Express Yourself’ looked at how art can be a way exploring emotions and difficult feelings. The aim of the project was to give young people the confidence to access and engage with art and cultural events in the future and pursue their talents. It offered taster sessions in the form of workshops within the hostel and in the wider community (at an arts café, music venues and dance studios) and also trips to galleries encouraging young people to engage with and create art. Beginning with what we already create every day (taking a selfie, posting a video, playing an instrument) and how that makes you feel, the project explored the idea of perspective, and how we can use art as a way of expressing emotion and conveying them to the world.
