culture exchange

The Culture Exchange programme connects young people, arts, cultural innovation and communities between Bradford and East London. Working with 20 young people (5 from Bradford and 15 from East London) the programme involves a high intensity learning programme supporting young people towards developing innovative and creative proposals that focus on education, training and pathways to self-employment in the arts, culture and placemaking.

Working with our award-winning partners Social Ark, and underpinned by our shared values around equity, equality, respect, empowerment and lived experience, the programme explores culture, heritage, and the art through the lens of working-class communities.  We have used the social enterprise business model within our exploration and journey. From experience, we know the power of young people using lived experience as a motivator to develop and deliver creative solutions to address inequality, and which the programme helps to develop into employment opportunities for young people from underrepresented backgrounds.

Over a period of six months, each young person involved will:

  • Come up with and develop an idea for a creative arts and culture approach to dealing with a social issue,

  • Develop the idea into a proposal/project that has the potential to become a creative social enterprise (using a Business Model Canvass),

  • Develop public speaking and pitching skills,

  • Complete an application for funding and present their proposal to a panel to secure £1000,

  • Receive £1000 towards getting the idea off the ground (with a potential of a further £5000) for those that can show real potential for development of a viable Arts and Culture based social enterprise

During 6 month programme, each young person will attend three 3 day residential (London (May 2024), Bradford (August 2024) and Nottingham (September 2024) and receive a weekly online and in person mentoring session
